How to draw funky hair

Hi Guys

This week we’ll have a look at some of the fun examples of funky hairdos.

We always have main characters with normal hairdos, this makes them easier to relate to for the readers. This makes them blend in.

I prefer characters that stick out. Especially the unlikely antihero type.

So, have a look at this week’s pic.

I use the usual grid sketch (line up the eyes and the nose) to plot the drawing. Except this time, I have added the rough shape of the hair into the grid. This gives you a good idea of what you will need to fill in.

The first pic is a guy with a Mohawk, The next is a guy with an afro and the last is a Rasta with dreadlocks.

Their hair tells as much of a story as their expressions. Making for some pretty fun characters!

So experiment with some crazy hair styles and show us what you come up with!

Two common illustration mistakes to avoid

Hi Guys

The first mistake that people make is to draw guys with huge muscles ALL the time. This often defeats the purpose of the story. How can a super hero be super if everyone is as big as him? Where are all the normal people?

It is often easier and more fun to draw muscled up heroes, than to draw normal people, but your work will lack perspective.

The other mistake is to put the wrong body and head together. Choose a body type that is best suited to the face you are drawing. Have a look at this week’s pics.

The top character has a kid next door face, the muscled physique doesn’t suit him at all. He needs a smaller frame.

The bottom character, on the other hand, works better muscled up.

You might find that normal people are fun to draw too and sometimes more challenging.

Experiment and have fun! And let us see some of your work.

How to draw animal eyes

Hi Guys

This weeks tutorial is a follow-up to the Animal mouth tutorial.
Basically, the two main features of an animal that need to be checked closely are the mouth and the eyes.

Animals -eyes

The pic I’ve attached this week is some more random animals namely a snake, gofer, a cat, rabbits and wolves. Look carefully at the eyes and see what emotion you can tell each set is feeling. It sounds ridiculous, but the best way to figure out how to start drawing the emotion you want, try standing in front of a mirror and pulling the face yourself. I’ve done this to get a picture right. Don’t worry I’m sure no ones looking. ;)

With animals, they don’t really have eyebrows to show emotion, but rather a lump of furry fat above their eyes that bends and shapes according to their emotions. The principal is the same though. Curving up or down is the difference between anger and sadness in the eyes. Or one raised and one static could be curiosity. Have a close look at what I’ve drawn this week and even the eyes from last week and let me know what you come up with!

Mouths pt 2

Hi guys

Okay, this week we have a look at how to draw mouths and the subtle expressions you can create with them.

Firstly, have a look at the example this week.

The first two vertical rows are just examples. The last bunch show how you deconstruct the shape of whatever mouth you want to draw.

As you can see there are a few different shapes that you can use, the triangle gives you a happy mouth, the line gives you one that is neutral.

Two circles next to each other will give you a range of expressions, depending on how you draw the rest of the details.

A square will allow you to have an expression of surprise or one of oops.

Try using these basic shapes to create a range of different emotions.

I’d go so far as to say look in the mirror or take a photo and then ‘comic-erize’ it.

It takes a while to wrap your skills around mouths, so look at these examples and try copy at first and then work out a system of shapes for yourself!

I would love to see what you come up with so please post your work on this blog as a resonse!

How to draw eyes

a step by step guide to drawing eyes

a step by step guide to drawing eyes

Hi Guys

This week we will look at the basics of drawing eyes. Start with a shape. In this case I chose a square.

On the example we have typical male eyes on the left and on the right we have typical female eyes.

With my style, the men’s eyes are larger than female eyes by default. This isn’t always the case, but it’s a guide to help you find your own style.

Now add in the iris and pupil. The position, size and shape will determine emotion and personality.

For example, a large round eye with a tiny pupil could mean fright or anger. If someone is looking to the side then they could be shy or suspicious.

Try out different positions and see what happens.

Now look at the eyelashes. Women have longer, fuller eyelashes than males. The fuller you make the eyelashes look the sexier the character starts to look.

Tip: Be careful, thick eyelashes on a guy usually don’t work. Few artists can pull that off.

Children usually have larger eyes than adults. This adds to their feeling of innocence. Look at the bottom middle set of eyes, these are the eyes of a child. In this case the eyelashes aren’t an issue because the character is so young.

It’s the hair and clothes that will make it either a girl or a boy.

Please post your thoughts or illustrations on here.
