How to draw animals who talk

Hi guys

This week’s tutorial was a very entertaining one to draw. Basically, when you’re drawing a comic that requires animals to speak, or just animals in general, you should learn to give them human features so they fit in with the comic style that you’re going for.

A realistic animal in a comic with animated people looks kinda strange.

So, firstly I’ll start with mouths. Have a look at the different animals I’ve drawn. Each of them has a fairly human shaped mouth to enable them to show emotion or even speak if that what you want with your comic.

For whatever animal you want to draw, bear in mind that the teeth should match the animal. For example, the hamster has the two front teeth, the snake has the fangs and the lion also has his full set of fangs.

But they all have human mouths.

If you don’t know what the animal looks like then do some research. Check on the net for pictures before attempting to draw the animal in comic style.

These are just for show, but on the bottom I’ve drawn some random mouth poses to help you out. Pick an animal and an emotion go for it. Use my examples as a guideline, and let me know what you come up with!

Animals Mouths

Mouths pt 2

Hi guys

Okay, this week we have a look at how to draw mouths and the subtle expressions you can create with them.

Firstly, have a look at the example this week.

The first two vertical rows are just examples. The last bunch show how you deconstruct the shape of whatever mouth you want to draw.

As you can see there are a few different shapes that you can use, the triangle gives you a happy mouth, the line gives you one that is neutral.

Two circles next to each other will give you a range of expressions, depending on how you draw the rest of the details.

A square will allow you to have an expression of surprise or one of oops.

Try using these basic shapes to create a range of different emotions.

I’d go so far as to say look in the mirror or take a photo and then ‘comic-erize’ it.

It takes a while to wrap your skills around mouths, so look at these examples and try copy at first and then work out a system of shapes for yourself!

I would love to see what you come up with so please post your work on this blog as a resonse!
