How to draw old people

Hi Guys

Well, this week’s tutorial made me FEEL old while drawing it. It’s quite strange drawing a young and old version of people.

I did two males and one female. The difference between guys and girls is that you can really go crazy with how a guy ages over time. It’s a lot trickier with women because they sort of have to age more majestically. So they have softer wrinkles that aren’t so pronounced.

Have a close look at the young versions of all the characters and their older versions next to them. What changes? The shape of the face is still there, the nose, eyes etc. All the key features. They are all there with a touch of sagginess.

If you are drawing old people and you’re not sure where to put the wrinkles, just start with the basics. These are under the eyes, the forehead and around the mouth.

You could even lightly draw the young version, and draw the older version over it.

As always experiment and see what you come up with!

Mouths pt 2

Hi guys

Okay, this week we have a look at how to draw mouths and the subtle expressions you can create with them.

Firstly, have a look at the example this week.

The first two vertical rows are just examples. The last bunch show how you deconstruct the shape of whatever mouth you want to draw.

As you can see there are a few different shapes that you can use, the triangle gives you a happy mouth, the line gives you one that is neutral.

Two circles next to each other will give you a range of expressions, depending on how you draw the rest of the details.

A square will allow you to have an expression of surprise or one of oops.

Try using these basic shapes to create a range of different emotions.

I’d go so far as to say look in the mirror or take a photo and then ‘comic-erize’ it.

It takes a while to wrap your skills around mouths, so look at these examples and try copy at first and then work out a system of shapes for yourself!

I would love to see what you come up with so please post your work on this blog as a resonse!

How to draw hair

Hi guys

This week we’re gonna take a basic look at hair and different hair styles for men and women.

The rules for hair are very flexible because hair falls any which way. You could even have something that looks great by accident (which is the case more often than not)

So, to start drawing the characters hair, create a circle larger than the head. This circle is your guideline to the shape of the hair. If the hair is spiked the guideline would be where you would like the spikes to end.

With naturally long hanging womanly hair, the line would extent to where the hair matches the shape of the head.

Then just outline where you would like the hair to flow. You can go crazy at this point. There’s no limit to how cool and funky you can go. Have a look at other artists work if you need ideas!

Let’s see what you come up with, post your hair ideas on this blog!

How to draw eyes

a step by step guide to drawing eyes

a step by step guide to drawing eyes

Hi Guys

This week we will look at the basics of drawing eyes. Start with a shape. In this case I chose a square.

On the example we have typical male eyes on the left and on the right we have typical female eyes.

With my style, the men’s eyes are larger than female eyes by default. This isn’t always the case, but it’s a guide to help you find your own style.

Now add in the iris and pupil. The position, size and shape will determine emotion and personality.

For example, a large round eye with a tiny pupil could mean fright or anger. If someone is looking to the side then they could be shy or suspicious.

Try out different positions and see what happens.

Now look at the eyelashes. Women have longer, fuller eyelashes than males. The fuller you make the eyelashes look the sexier the character starts to look.

Tip: Be careful, thick eyelashes on a guy usually don’t work. Few artists can pull that off.

Children usually have larger eyes than adults. This adds to their feeling of innocence. Look at the bottom middle set of eyes, these are the eyes of a child. In this case the eyelashes aren’t an issue because the character is so young.

It’s the hair and clothes that will make it either a girl or a boy.

Please post your thoughts or illustrations on here.

How to draw hands

Hi guys

This week we’ll be looking at how to draw basic hands by developing a system to work with.

First we start by roughly sketching a circle see drawing 1.

This is the palm of the hand. From the wrist end of the palm use a starting point and line out where you want the fingers to go. (Bear in mind your fingers can only spread so far).

Then add a few cross lines above the palm circle. Where these intersect will become the points where your knuckles/joints are. Now that it is measured out you fill in the detail of your hand. Use your own hand for reference if you have to. After drawing a few you’ll get so used to it then it will become second nature.

To recap, see the next 3.

Sketch it out, pop in the joint points and fill out your hand. Remember to use your own hand as reference if you have to. And keep practicing!
